During a sneak preview of its newest outlet, Żabka has opened the doors of a shop loaded with new technologies, including one of the world’s first perovskite installations. This breakthrough technology was used in so-called price tags and shutters with perovskite cells. The shop is equipped with systems to remotely manage the lighting and equipment inside (Smart Shop Control). At the coffee stand, there are tiles made of coffee grounds and husks. Lockable refrigerators insulated with hemp seed mats and glycol-filled shelves in the freezer cabinet are designed to save energy.

Żabka zaprezentowała smart sklep pełen innowacji

The company will launch its innovative shop in Poznań on 23 September. Meanwhile, the company’s management presented the most interesting solutions during a preview in Karpacz.

The new shop, called eco smart, will join a range of existing shop formats offered by Żabka.

The eco smart shop is an excellent addition to this offer, said Adam Manikowski, Vice President of the Board. We can open shops in various locations and residential areas. We have tobacco shops, seasonal shops, shops in office buildings, even mobile and unmanned solutions, as well as vending machines, said A. Manikowski.

Today, the company has 8,500 shops and is working with 7,200 franchisees.

The new store combines eco-friendly, energy-saving solutions, such as perovskites, and smart solutions, including sensors designed to streamline retailer and shop operations. Eco and smart solutions combined in the new platform make these businesses more competitive, said A. Manikowski. He admitted that the opening of the new shop would not have been possible without good cooperation with the authorities of Poznań, looking kindly on the facility during its construction.

The innovative facility is loaded with sensors that continuously check different shop’s functionalities. Employees can track the sensor results online.

Sensors monitor air humidity and limit the operation of the air conditioner when the doors are open. Some other sensors detect possible refrigeration failures as well as analyse and adjust light intensity.

The technological solutions were presented by Małgorzata Gąsiorek, Director of the Technical Department at Żabka. The first eco shop was established in Warszawa. Then, the company created the smart format and focused on technology.

We rely on Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance strategy and use the services of thousands of franchisees. Creating a space where ecology and economy work together was a natural step resulting in the eco smart shop. This is our technology solutions laboratory loaded with technology, said M. Gąsiorek.

She pointed out that the market development and market unpredictability as well as the sixfold increase in energy prices motivate them to reach for new technological solutions that make it easier to cope with new challenges.

The new shop serves as one of Żabka’s innovation labs where it tests new solutions, including renewable energy sources, some of which becoming common standards. The interesting solutions extensively used in the new shop include the perovskite technology as a complement to photovoltaic panels.

Photovoltaic solutions produce energy from sunlight while perovskites also draw on artificial light. It is a breakthrough in technology, said M. Gąsiorek. Perovskites printed on the film can be applied on various surfaces. Here you will see them printed on the shutters and on the price tags inside, she added.

The shop saves energy in various ways and some of the solutions are also designed for the comfort of customers. For example, a solar bench in front of the building enables you to charge your phone. There are also bicycle racks along with a repair station nearby. One of the walls of the building is covered with plants designed to produce oxygen and absorb dust and harmful compounds from the air. The anti-smog paving in front of the shop reduces the concentration of nitrogen oxides in the air in the area by an average of about 50% relative to asphalt.

For optimisation purposes, the shop’s cold stores consuming 60% of energy were also investigated in detail resulting in glycol shelves.

It is a kind of cold storage chamber that can be used during power shortages, for example, and allows goods to be stored during the power cut, said M. Gąsiorek.

Cold stores also make use of hemp wool. It has insulating properties comparable to polyurethane foam and is biodegradable, so that it can be composted.

Finally, a system of sensors called Smart Shop Control allows you to manage the optimisation of refrigerators, coffee makers, and grills. From now on, the employees do not have to check to add new sausages on the grill, for example, as the device will tell them about it.
